Blackfield is a collaboration between multi-instrumentalist and Porcupine Tree leader Steven Wilson and controversial Israeli pop star Aviv Geffen. After years of mutual admiration, the pair met to discuss a set of concert appearances in 2000 and, further drawn together by their similar interests in the classic rock albums of the '60s and '70s, wound up composing the first song under the Blackfield moniker. It would be another year before they reconvened in a Tel Aviv studio, and their plans to cut an EP soon ballooned into an 18-month period of sporadic writing and recording sessions, finally capped, after further delays, by the release of Blackfield's eponymous debut by Koch Records in early 2005. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia, Rovi
SW is a musical genius and his body of work is hard to match in the past 25 years... I thank God for him because all the crap on the horrible radio is poisoning our children.. And I can't wait to introduce my kids to REAL music like this.
I'm a huge prog rock fan, almost to the exclusion of everything else. I've loved Porcupine Tree from the first track I heard and Steven Wilson is one of the most prolific composers I've ever experienced.

Anything Steven Wilson touches is golden. He is the cutting edge of today's rock. Haven't seen anything like him since Candlebox, and he far surpasses them.
first time I've heard them and like both alot! reminds me of Ah-Ha, but more contemporary....great cross between heavy new rock like Shinedown or Daughtry, but they're singing, not screaming, and I love the real poetry in the writing. and execution of the songs... come tour at Tuacahn in St. George Utah!!!

Mozart did not play all the instruments but made beautiful Music. Just listen and enjoy if you like it, if not move on to something you do enjoy. I will be 60 in a few months and love Wilson's approach to music with this and Porcupine Tree. His sound is fresh and different from what is usually cranked out in todays Music Business.
Saw Blackfield for the first time back in May at the TLA in Phila. Unbelievable show, big sound filled the theater. I definitely agree with tbetts63ss.
Wilson and Geffen work very wll together. There appears to be an an energy between them that I can see on the Blackfield Live in New York DVD. I have not formed an opinion about No-Man (?).
Although Porcupine Tree is one of my top 3 favorite bands, I really dislike blackfield. It's boring, whiny, preachy, generally disagreeable. Wilson's collaboration with Opeth was superb, so it's not collaborating that makes it suck. It's just not my thing, I guess. I heard all of the first album and it was a snooze fest.
"A band who plays over tapes. Like a disc-jockey, not my kind of BAND"
Really, so you've met a disc jockey who's playing discs HE has recorded entirely by himself? Face it, old-timer: Computers and recording equipment enable musicians to be self-sufficient and make entirely new music. Just because it's "easier", just because you don't need so many people any more doesn't mean it is no longer a creative process of bringing something into existence that was once merely in the mind.
"How do they do concerts? Who plays bass? Drums? Strap cymbals under arms?- Ohh probably "guest musicians". What kind of band is this?!!. A band who plays over tapes. Like a disc-jockey, not my kind of BAND. Just disc-jockey- t y p e outfit to me"
Nope. Aviv Geffen has a long established band of his own, and when they are not used, various members of Porcupine Tree are. For live shows, usually Aviv's backing band is used.
agree with kothmac. If you like this, listen to Opeth's Damnation album, there's a cover steve does of one of their songs...or maybe it's the other way around, either way steve and michael sound almost exactly the same in both songs. awesome stuff
This 'band' is awesome. I think they have more than 'guest musicians' who play live with them. The songwriting is pure.

I like this cut -- so much better when Aviv Geffen refrains from forcing his entire voice through his nose, as in "Where Is My Love."

I saw PT for the first time last year in Orlando, FL at the House of Blues and then the following day during an in-store performance at this little CD store. i was blown away at their musicianship and haunting vocals.
This is Music !!!!! Nothing like this will ever turn up on cookie cutter radio !!! Thank the gods for REAL music. What a beautiful sound that is emanating from my computer.Blackfield and Porcupine Tree are amazingly genius bands !!!!

Anything with Steven in it is worthwhile listening.
