Black Mountain

After founding Jerk with a Bomb in the late '90s, Stephen McBean had by the mid-2000s transformed the Vancouver-area band into a group called Black Mountain. Drawing on blues, psychedelia, acid rock, and the Velvet Underground, Black Mountain's sound was a cross between the darkness and grit of the Warlocks and Brian Jonestown Massacre's trippiness. After debuting in October 2004 on Jagjaguwar with the 12" Druganaut, Black Mountain stayed with the label for an eponymous full-length, issued the following January. Joining McBean for the album were local players Matthew Camirand, Jeremy Schmidt, Joshua Wells, and Amber Webber, listed collectively to preserve the band's communal ethic. (Black Mountain ran concurrent to and intermingled with McBean's other band, lo-fi classic rockers Pink Mountaintops.) In January 2008, the group released their sophomore album, In the Future, and showed off their willingness to explore proggy (and druggy) territory with the 17-minute opus "Bright Lights." The group’s third, full length album, Wilderness Heart, arrived in 2010. ~ Johnny Loftus

Just found Black Mountain about two weeks ago and can't get enough. I cannot believe that with all of the algorithms of Pandora and Spotify, it took this long for me to come across them.

A damn good band. I got 'em on C.D. at the house."In the future"is very good. It will make you cry if you let it. I've made up a station called "Stoner Central". If anyone would like to check it out or add stuff just do so! It's always good to hear pulses from the world.

I hate that I like them so much. I like how dude disguises himself and calls his other band Pink Mountantops or something like that, then procedes to jam the heckka out and sound hotly unlike Black Mountain.

I saw them in SF and thought they needed a juice infusion. I guess touring will suck the soul out of the song sometimes... but come on boys and girl, sell it! Shows are where the money hides.

I'm starting to find this band strangely addicting.

Black Mountain are setting the bar for what will be considered "classic rock" in the future.
