The Black Angels

The sultry neo-psychedelic sound of the Black Angels came together in spring 2004. Hailing from Austin, Texas, they initially comprised Stephanie Bailey (drums), Christian Bland (guitar), Alex Maas (vocals), Jennifer Raines (organ), and Nathan Ryan (bass), and took their name from a Velvet Underground classic, "The Black Angel's Death Song." The band's self-titled debut EP was released in late 2005. After a string of North American dates in winter 2006, they readied themselves for a performance at the annual South by Southwest Music Conference in March. Their first couple of full-length albums -- April 2006's Passover and April 2008's Directions to See a Ghost -- were both, in the main, recorded at Erik Wofford's Austin, Texas-based Cacophony Recorders, a studio also used by other local and notable indie rock acts such as White Denim and Voxtrot. By the time the second record was issued, Raines had been replaced by multi-instrumentalist Kyle Hunt and the Black Angels were beginning to create a name for themselves on the live circuit among fans of '60s-inspired psych rock.

In late 2008, they performed as the backing band for former 13th Floor Elevators frontman Roky Erickson on a series of dates across the West Coast of the U.S. Next, in 2010, they recorded a couple of collaborative tracks with Unkle, one of which -- "With You in My Head" -- appeared on the soundtrack to that summer's multi-million-grossing The Twilight Saga: Eclipse. This large-scale exposure led to their third album, September 2010's Phosphene Dream, becoming something of a breakthrough record when it hit the Top 50 of the Billboard chart immediately following its release. Its companion piece, the Phosgene Nightmare EP, arrived in 2011, and in 2012, following Ryan's departure, Rishi Dhir of Elephant Stone became an auxiliary bandmember, filling in on guitar and occasionally bolstering their live sound with sitar. Released in 2013, Indigo Meadow was produced and mixed by Grammy-nominated fellow Texan John Congleton, and that release was soon followed by its own companion EP, April 2014's Clear Lake Forest. ~ MacKenzie Wilson & James Wilkinson, Rovi

Love The Flow of This Jam.
Great sound. I do have trouble with the need to find similarities to other bands like the doors. I am not a doors fan but like this, there is plenty of music to go around and not that hard to hit the thumbs up/down. I'm just grateful Pandora exists. No more commercial radio for me with brain dead DJ's with an over inflated sense of greatness, music speaks for itself.
Wicked, where do I catch them live?

Dig!
All comes back to Hawkwind really
Why isn't this band more popular?
crunch not saying the elevators came from that time frame more the angels are best in 20

unbelievable , I just saw them in Chicago.
sounds ALOT like the doors
@ ccorona2008 - dang it!!! missed that... perfect venue for this stellar band
Thanks to Pandora I now have a station labeled Neo-Psychede l i a . I also have Passover and Phosphene Dream.
,
The 13th Floor Elevators were a garage band from the sixties, silly.
next too the 13th floor elevators and surfers as best band out of texas and by far the best in over 20 years
Dont do it...
agnamemnon
More Gracy Slick then Jimbo i think. either way they rule
The Black Keys? Really Pandora? They have about as much in common with The Black Angels as Miley Cyrus does with Megadeth. Oh wait, they both have Black in their names! Good call Pandora!
ccorona2008
Saw them at Pappy's and Harriet's last week out in Twenty Nine Palms. AWESOME!!
Sniper at The Gates of Heaven.
@jasonduran3 3

Black Keys bug me big time. I think we've had enough smart a** white guys pilfering the blues for the aeon.
Excellent sound, a new band to me. The Black Angles come up on my Jesus and Mary Chain station, no Black Keys yet.
I hear it, dstauss. First thing I thought of.
NOT like the Black Keys. I really wish Pandora would stop playing Black Keys/Dan Auerbach on EVERY SINGLE ONE OF MY STATIONS.
Don't Play With Guns is their best song ever. So catchy. Love me that one. Fine job. NOW LET'S DANCE, KIND OF.
Don't play with guns....
Oh I didn't know they were from here!!! Just saw them at Austin Psych Fest yesterday. Fantastic show. :)
Why are they not playing songs off their new album, Indigo Meadow?
lizcallie9
Really like Manipulation . I don't think that they are like the Black Keys really, aside from having similar names. The Black Angels are so much better in my opinion
WOW!!! This guy sounds SO much like Jim Morrison!!! Love it!!!
They have always had a Doors bent to me. Late sixties psychadelic pushed through a mod indie/ grunge filter. VERY COOL!
I do not get the Black Keys/Auerbac h comparison - these guys are GOOD, original and creative. What The Black Keys would love to be someday, once they get some talent.
Spiritualize d , Spaceman 3, and early Verve...this is how I gravitated here...does anyone else hear a similarity?

This is just 3 different incarnations of The Black Keys, who I like as well, but this station plays more Black Keys than Black Angels.
OK I've read most of the comments and I see a similarity between BA and Doors but has anyone thought about parallels with Jefferson Airplane? The vocal is closer to Gracie Slick than Jim M. and , yes, they have the sound of the Doors but the Doors didn't get invited to the White House to turn-on Tricky Dick. Come on expand you psychodelic minds!
Love, love, love these Cats! Please come to the Delaware Valley......

Like, woah. Yeah. The colors, man, the colors.

Dude, Pandora needs a better bio about this band. They're too awesome to give them one paragraph.

The cover of Phosphene Dream is 0.0

if jim morrison was getting a blow job from neil young, while listening to mazzy star........ w e l l , i think it would sound like this.
Blend the Velvet Underground and The Doors and this is what you get... and that's a good thing.
I can't get enough of this band!I live in Austin and I get to see them often.if you have not seen them live, you must!I got to meet them as well.they are all very cool, down to earth people.I hope there fame grows and grows.they are f***ing awsome!!!

The only reason I have a problem with this song is the siren. It freaks me out...

They're not only a great live band, but friendly as well. I met them in April after a great show in Detroit. They were gracious and all signed my show poster.
