Billy McLaughlin

Contemporary acoustic guitarist Billy McLaughlin was born and raised in Minneapolis, later studying music at the University of Southern California. There he explored composition as well as finger-style acoustic guitar, and soon after graduating independently issued a pair of 1989 LPs, Inhale Pink and Exhale Blue. Regularly playing upwards of 200 live dates a year, McLaughlin issued his third album, The Archery of Guitar, in 1993; upon its release, he was named "New Age Artist of the Year" at the Minnesota Music Awards. Wintersongs and Traditionals followed in 1994, and with the Hindu Rodeo Crew McLaughlin recorded The Bow and Arrow a year later. With 1996's Fingerdance, he made his Narada label debut, returning in 1999 with Out of Hand. Stormseekers followed a year later. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi

As said a few times below.... the most important part of his bio has been left out. His comeback from focal dystonia is nothing short of a miracle. It shows how passionate AND talented Billy is.
Report as inappropriate
Billy was afflicted with focal dystonia, a neural disease. He had to learn to play with his left hand. In his 1st CD after conquering this condition , Extraordinar y Measures, the return of billy mclaughlin, he shows his incredible talent. My sons worked with him on that concert. One did the audio post production, the other took all the still photography. They were so proud to be part of this incredible experience. Billy is a master musician with a unique and wonderful sound.

Had never heard of him before Pandora played it for me. Very enjoyable!! I agree with the comment below about reminding me of the amazing Michael Hedges, he left us too soon.

The bio only goes through 1999. It appears to have been written 14 years ago.Facebook should require more up-to-date bio's from Rovi. The discography only goes through 2001 and includes only 3 of the artist's 12 recordings. Being a content provider is one thing. Being a a provider of quality content is another thing altogether.

Amen to Billy's tenacity. Billy's kindness and support encouraged me to make my first cd. Such a good man and an amazing and inspiring talent. ~DS

Would have been nice if you'd mentioned in the Bio that he developed a neural disease that pretty much ended his career, then learned to play left handed and has re-launched touring and recording. Pretty amazing!

I met Billy last week at a fundraising event in Minneapolis. His story is an inspiration and his music makes me feel like my troubles are floating away...

It cracks me up that Michael Hedges isn't even on this above-list of Similar Artists!
Report as inappropriate
For those that already mentioned it here...Micha e l Hedges was the guy who really got the percussive, fingertappin g style on the map. What the heck, he created the map and others like BM here must pay homage to him. I'm not taking anything away from BM, just so the truth be known. Michael's still the master of masters in that regard. Almost every song was an open tuning and the guy was on fire during his live performances . Thank you, Michael Hedges, for everything you left behind.

Saw him about 10 years ago at a very small, personal venue - the Wire coffeehouse in New Cumberland, PA. Everyone was mesmerized by this master - one of my favorites - I own three of his cds!

I saw the story of his struggle on TV the other day and it brought tears to my eyes. We all think we have such big problems, but his disability and determinatio n to overcome it is humbling. Bravo, Billy.

Saw him live @ a Keller Williams event when I was expecting my youngest son. He was incredible and my baby boy danced inside as he listened, he now has a total attraction to guitar music and is so happy when I play Billy's music

Billy Mac just played in Madison this past Friday and what a performance. During the break, he spent time with 3 young and upcoming guitarist to demonstrate his unique style. Billy McLaughlin fills my office each and everyday.
