Big Bad Voodoo Daddy

Like Squirrel Nut Zippers and the Cherry Poppin' Daddies, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy revived big-band music for the '90s and beyond. BBVD concentrated on the swinging days of the '40s and '50s, borrowing some of the Rat Pack lingo in addition to the zoot suits that cloaked each bandmate. Formed in Los Angeles in 1992, the group built up a following with regular gigs on the local lounge circuit, playing to Gen-Xers enamored with the kitschy charm of the cocktail nation. This burgeoning lounge scene was captured in the hit 1996 indie comedy film Swingers, which featured a song by Big Bad Voodoo Daddy on the soundtrack as well as an onscreen cameo by the band. By the end of 1997, the band had self-released two albums -- Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and What'chu Want for Christmas -- which were local hits and led to a major-label contract with Capitol Records.

In February 1998, Capitol released the group's major-label debut, Americana Deluxe (also known as Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, although the album was different from the band's self-released debut). This Beautiful Life followed one year later. By the time the band came together for a follow-up, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy had sold over three million albums, performed at Super Bowl XXXIII with Stevie Wonder and Gloria Estefan, and had their music used in over 60 film and TV trailers. The swing revival had considerably died down, however, thus returning Big Bad Voodoo Daddy to their original status as an underground band.

The group's fifth album, Save My Soul, appeared in 2003, five years after their Interscope debut. Inspired by the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Save My Soul found the band expanding its sound to include elements of the Big Easy's jazz, swamp funk, and Cajun traditions. A live CD/DVD and holiday-themed album appeared in 2004. In 2009, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy released How Big Can You Get?: The Music of Cab Calloway, which found the band digging even deeper into a hardcore jazz and swing sound. The band stuck with the more swing- and jazz-oriented approach after signing with the Savoy Jazz label and releasing Rattle Them Bones in 2012. Their third collection of Christmas music, It Feels Like Christmas Time, appeared in the fall of 2013. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

Setzer, Indigo Swing, and BBVD can do no wrong:)
yeah man, if you can't enjoy swing, then you don't know music
I'm a thrash metal guy, but I can't believe there's anyone who wouldn't like a good swing band like BBVD.

Was given tickets as a Christmas gift to their concert at the Tarrytown Music Hall, in Tarrytown, NY last week 01/16/14. What a show! Their music is how I like it, comes right at you! Keeps your feet moving throughout the show. They have another fan in NY. Looking forward until they return to the metro-NY area.

I love big time operator
These guys are amazing!
Don't read this because it actually works. You will be kissed on the nearest Friday by the love of your life. Tomorrow will be the best day of your life. However if you don't post this you will die in 2 days. Now you started reading this so don't stop. This is so scary put this on at least 5 songs in the next 143 minutes. When done press f6 and your lovers name will appear on the screen in big letters this is so scary because it actually works
ahhh, swing me baby yea yea yea swing
Just saw them last weekend in Wichita, KS for the second time. Great as always. After the concert we went to a bar down the street, and there were five of the band members having a beer. We ended up talking to them for about 20 minutes. Great guys. One of them told me how the band got its name. Some jazz musician signed one of their guitars BBVD and the name stuck.
Go Daddy-O.
LOVE THESE GUYS. helped us jazz band nerds cheer.
These guys were huge when I was a teenager, at least in my area of Southern Oregon. I think I still have a dollar bill that all of them signed
Saw these guys on the stage - they are even better on stage. They run an awesome show.
LOVE this music. It's a shame there aren't more swing bands.
Just what this country needs today.
Live outside by the bay in San Diego. Good show. Weird hearing that music coming from a few guys wearing bermuda shorts and Hawaiian shirts, though.
My 19 year old college student and her boyfriend (both musicians) saw them live in Allentown, PA and LOVED them!! I can't wait 'til they come my way.
I used to listen to them when they were a house band... was amazed when I first saw them on a jukebox. (about a dozen years ago)
Saw them last night in Atlanta, fantastic show! Even my 11 year old begrudgingly admitted it was very fun music, and he enjoyed it too. Fantastic musicians and showmen, and classy to a fault.
Saw them live when I lived in Denver. Great show. Fun music.

Like saxophone. Keep it up BBVD.
Why can't this band receive the mainsteam radio play they so richly deserve? Saw them perform in NM a coulpe of years ago. Meet and greet w/ signed CD was such a thrill. Had to splurge on a BBVD Dickies shirt. They are the coolest Daddy-Os. I pray they continue their music and continue touring. God bless BBVD.

For a short time in the mid 80s I hung out with the lead singer, Scotty Morris, I sure was happy to see him reach his goals. Great guy and great music.

I saw them perform with the Omaha Symphony just before they released the Cab Calloway collection.. . A W E S O M E stuff! I am hoping to see them in Minneapolis in March. Just an overall good time!
I saw this band for the first time a few weeks back at Turning Stone Casino in NY. They were awesome. I had a great time and would definitely see them again.
They were awesome at the Yosemite Internationa l Jazz Festival. Definitely a band that is just as good live, if not better, than their albums. Awesome show.
enjoyed every note at Orleans in las vegas recently com on back

the Squirrel Nut Zippers did not play or revive big band music. SNZ's play Hot Jazz which is a sub-genre all to itself. Hot Jazz was pushed out of many clubs back in the day by swing (big) bands.

I saw BBVD in a lounge in Las Vegas years ago. They had everyone dancing around in the casino!
Fun feel good hip music!
My dad told me about this group a while back, I wish I was a hipster in the 90's.
i love this music. you can not help but to boogie in your chair. you would not believe it was released in the 2000's.
I bought both of their cds while I was still living in California. I love them and their music just makes me want to dance.
@DeWayne: I've heard selections from every album pictured above. It all depends on what other songs/styles you like/dislike . *shrug*

Additionally : I'm not sure I like Cab Calloway himself but I *love* all BBVD's covers of his music!
Just saw them in Napa last weekend. The most fun I've had at a concert ever!
