Behold...The Arctopus

Colin Marston and Mike Lerner had been playing guitar together for over a year-and-a-half by the time they found a drummer who could keep up with their fast, technically difficult brand of progressive metal. After posting two demos (using a drum machine) online, Marston (on the Warr guitar, a 12-stringed instrument that covers the range of a bass and guitar and is generally played by tapping) and Lerner (on electric guitar) met Charlie Zeleny, who impressed the duo when he played a song of theirs for them at their first meeting and was immediately asked to join Behold...The Arctopus. Inspired by both metal and 20th century classical, as well as the improvisational nature of jazz, the band released their first full-length album, Nano-Nucleonic Cyborg Summoning, which combined a three-song EP of the same name and their debut, Arctopocalypse Now...Warmageddon Later, as well as four live tracks in 2006. ~ Marisa Brown, Rovi

WHAT?! NEW ALBUM!!! OHMYHOLYMOTH E R F U C K I N G G O D S M A C K I N G DOG!!!
@esak - check out _Beyond the Lands of Human Existence_ (2007) by Direwolf aka Mike Lerner
BTA has complex arrangements , interesting harmonies, time/key signature changes, polyrhythms/ s y n c o p a t i o n , which are also common in jazz. But so do Stravinksy, Bartok, and other 20th century classical composers, which are decidedly not jazz. Complex music != jazz. Plus BTA ROCKS HARD!!!!
I love what marston and longstreth are doing in gorguts! luc lemay and these freaks are a godly combination.
Love this s**t!!!
everyone talks about colin marston but never mike lerner. he f**king rips on guitar and is practically influenced by everything from death metal to jazz
Yes. It seems as if Colin is influenced heavily by classical arrangements , even though at times it may seem there's a free-form feel to what's going on. This band rules
yeah i agree with tazer, improv is the contradictio n to this style,
I don't think it is accurate to say that they are influenced by the improvisatio n a l nature of jazz, as ALL of their music is very carefully composed by computer beforehand, and EXACTLY THE SAME EVERY TIME THEY PLAY IT. As I understand it, this is the antithesis of Improvisatio n . . .
They've released one album. It's a little too pretentious to start saying "their old stuff is better"
Skullgrid is really good, but their older stuff is A lot better personally I think. But either way this is a f-in SICK SICK band, I love them!!!!!!!
