Bedrich Smetana (1824-1884) was a 19th century Bohemian composer who, along with Dvorák, led the musical movement for nationalism in his country. His best-known opera, The Bartered Bride, was not a success when premiered, but others of Smetanas stage works were performed with frequency in his lifetime. His series of six nationalistic tone poems, Má Vlast (My Fatherland), also became popular, most notably Vltava (The Moldau). A persistent ringing in Smetana's ears was vividly represented in his autobiographical String Quartet, but this affliction led to deafness, and he was committed to an asylum, where he died of tertiary syphilis. ~ Blair Sanderson, Rovi

Madness is a gem to the psyche. A sad way to go. Tears to Smetana.
