Be Bop Deluxe was a '70s British rock group led by guitarist Bill Nelson (born on December 18, 1948, Wakefield, Yorkshire, England) who veered between glam rock, pop, and heavy metal, with lots of demonstrations of Nelson's guitar prowess. After recording with Gentle Revolution and on his own, Nelson put together the first lineup of Be Bop Deluxe in 1972: Ian Parkin (guitar), Robert Bryan (bass), and Nicholas Chatterton-Dew (drums). But after the release of the first album, Axe Victim, Nelson sacked the band. The second album, Futurama, featured Nelson with a rhythm section of bassist Charles Tumahai and drummer Simon Fox. Keyboard player Andrew Clark joined for the third album, Sunburst Finish, which contained the U.K. chart single "Ships in the Night." Be Bop Deluxe released a fourth album, Modern Music; a concert recording, Live! In the Air Age, that became their only U.K. Top Ten hit; and a fifth studio album, Drastic Plastic, before Nelson folded the enterprise, briefly tried another group, Red Noise, and went solo again in 1979. Since then he has recorded prolifically, if experimentally, and handled occasional production jobs. ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi
Bill Nelson influenced many of us .. Saw them every time they came west and the first time opening for Slade and Badfinger .!! Funny ..!!! Then when they opened for Ted Nugent ! God he sucked even then .. Bill Graham gave em 45 minutes and people begged for more but they only got one quick encore .. Then when they headlined Tom Petty opened for them on his first album tour ...Could not be placed because Bill was so far ahead .. Listen to RedNoise and you will understand why every time an album
Bill Nelson was one of the most underated guitarists of that era. He was dubbed Wing Fingers in the early to mid seventies (take a futher listen and you will easily hear why). An incredible talent filled with genius!
I have been a big fan of BeBop Deluxe since college. This was one of my favorite bands and I still listen to groups that fly under the radar.

Somewhere, in my closet of junk I've had since I was a teen, I have a cassette I found in te backstage area of a Be Bop gig. The tape contains, either band members or crew members, trying to seduce an intoxicated groupie. Kind of irrelevant to this but it was funny and I treasure it b/c it captures a moment that no one else remembers.
Sometimes I think it's better for a band not to achieve too much success too soon...it makes them push themselves musically to new heights. In this case it paid off in spades. Be Bop Deluxe is one of the greatest under appreciated bands of their era.
I've been listening to this group since the 1970's (Uh, I guess that sort of gives my age away), and I still haven't ran into a lot of people who have heard, let alone listen to them.
Groups in the 70,s just had more imagination than any group that came out of the 80,s 90,s or anything in the past 10 yrs - except for maybe porcupine tree a really good prog rock band of the last 20 yrs- rock bands in the 70s always took chances that no band in the last 30 years have gone near - just different instrumentation and all sorts of things - i think it all about money now - bebop delux was a good band I know my brother had sun burst finish there were some good moments on that record.
Hard for me to pinpoint why I liked these guys so much but I did. Just very pleasant writing and music. If you listen to some of today's indie bands you can hear very similar elements. Just smart music. Lucky enough to have seen the a couple of times in the 70's.
This song was not originally released on Modern Music. It was released on the Best of and the Rest of Be Bop Deluxe. This was vinyl with ~1/2 the tracks previous recordings and ~1/2 new songs.

If you haven't heard it in it's entirety I would suggest doing so. Far superior renditions of the studio versions.
