Founded in 1999 by Jyri Vahvanen and Mika Kokkola, Finnish heavy metal ensemble Battlelore blend the epic sounds of power, goth, and death metal with imagery from author J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings series. Formed in the city of Lappeenranta, the group, whose members changed about frequently, released two demos (Warrior's Tale and Dark Fantasy) before securing a record deal with Napalm in 2001. The resulting Where the Shadows Lie was released the following year. Sword's Song arrived in 2003, followed by Third Age of the Sun in 2005. Evernight arrived in early 2007. ~ James Christopher Monger, Rovi
For quite a while, I was unable to lock on to any band as my favorite. I just assumed I would never have another fav band.
Then Battlelore presented itself with the best of everything I love about music. Serene, mystical vocals coupled with black harsh tones with dark overtones, majestic background music, a blend of viking and power metal front sounds. Man, I don't know if it can get better than this!

It's so weird..I started to like this band when I heard House Of Heroes for the first time, which I stumbled upon one day I was just browsing through female fronted metal bands, particularly from Finland, like Nighhwish or some others...When I heard that song, and saw the video to it, I was hooked...Now a days I can't have enough of these band...I have several of their videos, and, I must say, my favorite, song and video, is The Third Immortal, the intro, involving those drums, is just awesome..
This music puts the image of beauty and the beast in my mind, in a poetic and dramatic contrast between the female and male vocals that has a peculiar beauty to it.
I like the female vocalist and the music. Don't care much for the growls, though. Can't give it a thumbs up just for that reason. Didn't give it a thumbs down, though.
I have Last Alliance and am getting Evernight soon. These guys are epic! They're one of the first metal bands I ever listened to, and they are still among my favorites!
@OMW: I've been meaning to pick that album up myself at some point, it's been gradually working it's way up my ridiculous list of things I'm definitely going to buy at some point.
Epic Dreams is amazing as well. The soft/harsh blend works very well for Battlelore. Of course, the conflicting soundscapes always equals WIN!! The Great Gathering is excellent as well. My first album will have be The Last Alliance.
Oh VERY COOL! Spinning the tune "Awakening" and I must say I very much enjoy what I am hearing. Who would of thought that entwining growled vocals in vocal harmonies with normal vocals would sound so freaking cool?! I'm officially sold on this band. F*KIN EPIC!
Just heard this group for the first time today, and I quite enjoyed it. It's truly been a banner day for finding new bands I like (this is either the 3rd or 4th one today!).
Some growling vocalists pull it off very well, like the growling vocalist in Battlelore. With the female vocals, it's even better! The juxtaposition is great.
If they're growling, I'm outta there. Most of that sounds like Cookie Monster to me.

Growling is a key characteristic of gothic metal. It's a juxtaposition of the beautiful and melodic (female vocals) with the aggressive and powerful (male vocals). You either like it or you don't, but you have to admit that it adds a certain dynamic to the work as a whole. Think of it this way: it's the same as putting piano and electric guitar in the same song.

Can somebody please explain to me why so many metal bands scream and growl. I'm working to understand/ appreciate it- but it seems like crapping on a beautiful painting.
