I've always like David Cassidy's version of this song better. It's on his Higher They Climb album. But this song had to be written before 1976 since that album was released in 1975. BTW album was produced by David Cassidy and Bruce Johnston (writer of this song). I remember hearing Barry Manilow's version of this on the radio and thinking that it should be David's version instead. :D
This song was written by Bruce Johnston, a former Beach Boy. It's not about a person who writes the songs but the spirit of music, the first line "I've been alive forever" rules out mortals. The spirit writes the songs by putting the words into the hearts and minds of songwriters.
Since its a song it doesn't need to be realistic, if you want realism go watch the news.
Written by Bruce Johnston in '76 where Barry, David Cassidy(of Partridge Family fame), and Captain and Tennile all performed it in the same year. Barry's hit #1 for 2 weeks on Billboard.

This song was not written by Barry, but by a collaborative duo; don't remember their names but they were similar to elton john and berniw taupin.
It just dawned on me after hearing this song for almost forty years..... I really have no idea what the lyrics mean?? I know what they're trying to say, but reality is, they just don't work for me. Nope. Doesn't make any sense.
Who is actually writing the songs? Music? Who? Who is I?? Music? Manilow?
Yeah. Really. Okay, whatever you say.
Did Manilow or Music write this song? If not Barry, he better give his royalty check back.
