Baroness play an eclectic brand of heavy metal, embracing the ferocity and sharp technique of new-millennium metal but with melodic accents and intelligent guitar work that suggest the influence of indie rock and post-punk bands. The four members of Baroness -- John Baizley on guitar and vocals, Brian Blickle on guitar, Summer Welch on bass, and Allen Blickle on drums -- are all originally from Lexington, Virginia, but they pulled up stakes and relocated to Savannah, Georgia, when they formed the band in mid-2003. Baroness made their recording debut in 2005 with First, a three-song EP released through Savannah-based indie label Hyperrealist Records. A second EP from Baroness, simply called Second, appeared in stores later the same year. In 2006, Baroness teamed up with another offbeat but powerful band from Savannah, Unpersons, for a split EP entitled A Grey Sigh in a Flower Husk, released through At a Loss Records. In 2007, Baroness signed with the well-respected independent metal label Relapse Records, and in the fall of 2007 they issued their first full-length disc, The Red Album, followed by extensive touring. In the fall of 2009, the group released its sophomore effort, Blue Record. Baroness spent the following year touring, opening for bands like Metallica, Mastodon, and Deftones before heading back into the studio to begin work on their third album, Yellow & Green, which would arrive in 2012. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
Never heard them before Pandora..heavy open tuning rock. One of many great discoveries on the Shoegaze channel alone.

Theres always one dumbsh!t in the crowd with a big mouth. I was making a comparison between the rough aggressive sound of heavy metal compared to smooth flow of Baroness' music. You must have missed that while feeding your giraffe.
Heavy metal like Meth? lmao... That's just plain weak...

Grad.... Amazing. The song that converted me from the anger of heavy metal back to enjoying my music. Heavy metal is like meth, you might enjoy it but its eating you alive the whole time - but this, this my friend is ecstasy.
They have there own sound nothing like mastodon or anything like that maby in that crash instant or 2 but besides that they dont sound the same but they sound good
Baroness along with Mastodon are going to shape the face of Prog, and hopefully lead it away from those metalcore posers that say they are "inventive". Truth is, to those posers, there are 1k+ out there that sound like them. It takes balls to sound different, and Baroness and Mastodon really do the damn best job.

Fan of Baroness since the Red Album came out, finally saw them with Mastodon and BTBAM a couple weeks ago... Nearly stole the show from Mastodon, imo..
I have been reading a bunch of reviews on the blue album its supposed to be really trippy and really good wish I had flow to buy it. Wouldn't want to pirate that
come on they dont sound nuthin like Mastodon...Baroness have their own sound..i love mastodon, but baroness ranks up there!! cant wait too hear the blue album....these r the future 4 metal!!!!!
I take that back, Kylesa also sounds something like Mastodon. Mastodon, Kylesa and Baroness are pretty much the top of the heap "prog. metal" bands out there today me thinks.
That would be a phenomonal show....
Really the ONLY band that sounds anything like Mastodon.
Smart metal, true Progressive Metal. Like it alot.
I would like a little more heavy ness, a little more thrash ish crunch here and there, but its great overall.

Awesome band i slowely started listening to them about a week ago and now i can't stop listening to them. i like their prog metal and their originality. i can agree that they are compareable with mastodon.
This is currently one of my favorite bands. After discovering then a few months ago, I haven't been able to stop listening to them. Not only are their first two EP's great, but The Red Album is the best sludge record I've heard since Leviathan. It blows me away how much talent this band has.
This band is amazing... The guitar tones are to die for. Love their progressions ! I get down to this album an a daily basis. They're like a more melodic Mastodon.
They hint at Mastodon, but a little more artsy, a little more emotional maybe.
They are definately ahead of the pack in originality and "prog metal"
I am very much looking forward to thier next offering, hope its a little heavier.

And Angel, your ignorance is your bliss it seems...
They are thier own sound, similar to Mastodon yes because there eclectic and A prog metal band, but thats not "thier goal"
Besides is that a bad thing? Mastodon is bad friggin a**. One of the best bands out there for any metal head with a brain.
Do you just not like "thinking mans metal" ?
His artwork is incredible as well.
That would be a phenomonal show....
