Baroness

Baroness play an eclectic brand of heavy metal, embracing the ferocity and sharp technique of new-millennium metal but with melodic accents and intelligent guitar work that suggest the influence of indie rock and post-punk bands. The four members of Baroness -- John Baizley on guitar and vocals, Brian Blickle on guitar, Summer Welch on bass, and Allen Blickle on drums -- are all originally from Lexington, Virginia, but they pulled up stakes and relocated to Savannah, Georgia, when they formed the band in mid-2003. Baroness made their recording debut in 2005 with First, a three-song EP released through Savannah-based indie label Hyperrealist Records. A second EP from Baroness, simply called Second, appeared in stores later the same year.

In 2006, Baroness teamed up with another offbeat but powerful band from Savannah, Unpersons, for a split EP entitled A Grey Sigh in a Flower Husk, released through At a Loss Records. In 2007, Baroness signed with the well-respected independent metal label Relapse Records, and in the fall of 2007 they issued their first full-length disc, The Red Album, followed by extensive touring. In the fall of 2009, the group released its sophomore effort, Blue Record. Baroness spent the following year touring, opening for bands like Metallica, Mastodon, and Deftones before heading back into the studio to begin work on their third album, Yellow & Green, which would arrive in 2012.

After the release of the album, while on tour in England, Baroness were involved in a terrible accident when their tour bus went over the side of a viaduct near Bath, falling 30 feet. Though many of the bandmembers and their crew were injured, with Baizley suffering a broken arm and leg and Blickle and bassist Matt Maggioni (who had earlier replaced Summer Welch) both hospitalized with fractured vertabrae, there were no fatalities. After recovering from their injuries, Baroness began scheduling tour dates again in 2013, though the announcement they would be on the road again was followed shortly by the announcement that Blickle and Maggioni would be parting ways with the band. Bassist Nick Jost and drummer Sebastian Thomson were recruited to take their place, and made their live debut on a headlining tour later that year. The live album Live at Maide Vale would arrive in the summer of 2013, and would be the last release from the band to feature their pre-accident lineup. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Shut up with the sounds like this and prog this or I'm a tone deaf brother p-touch and come up with labels that these bands HATE! I've been on the road as a drum tech for 15 years and let me tell you how they make fun of dumb s**t their "here today gone tomorrow" fans say.....oh God it's so wrong.....cr i n g e w o r t h y . Just enjoy the music and if you really feel like typing something, type: I love you guys. I saw you on six hits of blotter acid and you changed my life. My friends ended up in the hosp
I'm 24... I buy CDs and Vinyl
I buy cdz and im 15 thank you XD>
Everytime I hear this band it makes me want to put on Mickey Mouse cockring
This is a band of true artists ....look at the cd covers ..oh wait...does anyone under 30 even know what a CD is?
Saw them tour for the Red Album by opening for Opeth. Flat out stunning.

Theres always one dumbsh!t in the crowd with a big mouth. I was making a comparison between the rough aggressive sound of heavy metal compared to smooth flow of Baroness' music. You must have missed that while feeding your giraffe.
Heavy metal like Meth? lmao... That's just plain weak...

Grad.... Amazing. The song that converted me from the anger of heavy metal back to enjoying my music. Heavy metal is like meth, you might enjoy it but its eating you alive the whole time - but this, this my friend is ecstasy.
Baroness is one of my all time favorites, and a manlier beard there never was.
I just listened to Grad, im in pure awe.
They have there own sound nothing like mastodon or anything like that maby in that crash instant or 2 but besides that they dont sound the same but they sound good
Yellow/Green That CD is great.
Epic band
I dont like my first listen through of yellow and green....... a t all. Way to mellow, doesnt even sound like them.
Good stuff. Hope all is well with the band since the crash
NO! GREEN!!!
Finally. I've been waiting for Pandora to send some Baroness my way for over a year. These guys are fantastic.

I WANT YELLOW!!!!!! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
fink9000
Sounds like Smashing Pumpkins meets Metal.
Greatest concert I've seen, ever! Valient Thorr, Baroness, Between the Buried and Me, and Mastodon as the headliner. Will never forget that one.
I saw them in a basement in 2003 and was really hoping to see them grow. The've blown up like crazy! Couldn't be better guys either.
Buy their albums. like now.

Just found Baroness, and really like what I have heard. Definitely going to seek out more...
I'm diggin' the HELL out of this band!
Is this band christian?
One of the most pure classic rock esque metal bands in existence. Beautiful art work as well. As a whole...this band simply kicks a**.
Baroness along with Mastodon are going to shape the face of Prog, and hopefully lead it away from those metalcore posers that say they are "inventive". Truth is, to those posers, there are 1k+ out there that sound like them. It takes balls to sound different, and Baroness and Mastodon really do the damn best job.
darkdave909
Fan of Baroness since the Red Album came out, finally saw them with Mastodon and BTBAM a couple weeks ago... Nearly stole the show from Mastodon, imo..
Relapse has some good artists, without a doubt..thoug h , they also have some absolutely terrible artists.
zippaspiel4
Incredible.. A n d they happen to be on one of the Best record labels, RELAPSE!
Thanks, mike.
you can listen to the whole blue album @ http://www.m y s p a c e . c o m / y o u r b a r o n e s s
love their style
I have been reading a bunch of reviews on the blue album its supposed to be really trippy and really good wish I had flow to buy it. Wouldn't want to pirate that
come on they dont sound nuthin like Mastodon...B a r o n e s s have their own sound..i love mastodon, but baroness ranks up there!! cant wait too hear the blue album....the s e r the future 4 metal!!!!!
they should have as a goal to sound like GS. Otherwise its a failure band
Well played baron.
me too this band has a good deal of potential to be a badass prog metal band.

And Angel, your ignorance is your bliss it seems...

They are thier own sound, similar to Mastodon yes because there eclectic and A prog metal band, but thats not "thier goal"

Besides is that a bad thing? Mastodon is bad friggin a**. One of the best bands out there for any metal head with a brain.

Do you just not like "thinking mans metal" ?
I can't wait for the next album, Blue Record
a.stubbs53
AMAZING live. That John Dyer is crazy.
His artwork is incredible as well.
one of my favorite bands right now. hell ya to baroness. i wish these guys would come through slc sometime
I take that back, Kylesa also sounds something like Mastodon. Mastodon, Kylesa and Baroness are pretty much the top of the heap "prog. metal" bands out there today me thinks.
That would be a phenomonal show....
Really the ONLY band that sounds anything like Mastodon.

Smart metal, true Progressive Metal. Like it alot.
I would like a little more heavy ness, a little more thrash ish crunch here and there, but its great overall.
ssroadkill13
Awesome band i slowely started listening to them about a week ago and now i can't stop listening to them. i like their prog metal and their originality. i can agree that they are compareable with mastodon.
great talent on cockroach en fleur
very very good
This is currently one of my favorite bands. After discovering then a few months ago, I haven't been able to stop listening to them. Not only are their first two EP's great, but The Red Album is the best sludge record I've heard since Leviathan. It blows me away how much talent this band has.
dbgoren
one of the smartest bands of metal
