Armored Saint

Although many associate hard rock from Los Angeles in the early '80s as all glossed up and pop-based (Mötley Crüe, Ratt, Quiet Riot, etc.), there were a select few true metal bands to emerge from the same locale, such as Armored Saint. Formed in 1982 and originally comprised of members John Bush (vocals), David Pritchard (guitar), Phil Sandoval (guitar), Joey Vera (bass), and Gonzo (drums, brother of Phil Sandoval), the group specialized in a style of straight-ahead metal that was compared to such New Wave of British Heavy Metal acts as Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and Saxon, among others. The quintet issued a three-track self-titled EP on the Metal Blade label in 1983, before signing on with Chrysalis. They put out such underappreciated releases as 1984's March of the Saint, 1985's Delirious Nomad, and 1987's Raising Fear and built a fanatical following in their native region, but failed to break through to the big time elsewhere.

Shortly after a switch back to the Metal Blade label in the late '80s, Armored Saint issued their first live recording, 1989's Saints Will Conquer, but bad news was lurking right around the corner. Founding guitarist Pritchard was diagnosed with leukemia and passed away in 1990. The group pressed on (with newcomer Jeff Duncan taking Pritchard's spot in the lineup), issuing Symbol of Salvation in 1991. But the band decided to call it a day a year later when Bush accepted an invitation to join New York thrash metallists Anthrax. By the late '90s, Armored Saint decided to reunite once more and Bush remained a member of Anthrax and Armored Saint simultaneously (Vera was also doing double duty, as he'd become a member of prog-metallists Fates Warning). The newly re-formed outfit issued an all-new recording in 2000, Revelation, while a double-disc anthology, Nod to the Old School, surfaced a year later. A decade later in 2010, the band released La Raza, their 8th full-length album, on Metal Blade. ~ Greg Prato, Rovi

Was Scott Ian ever in armored saints?
Can you deliver pizza to meeeee
I seen them in the 80s - they opened for metallica

just as good live, if not better than metallica - I liked them better - and I really like metallica
I just ran across this group yesterday by accident. Great rockers. Great instrumentat i o n ; great vocalization s , great beat.......a l w a y s so, so cool to find a group that has been around for years and years and have never heard of them. Makesme realize how much I have missed by being so myopic in my music appreciation ! ! !
Other than the stupid hispanic named La raza, most of there other catalog is solid !
When I first heard the riff to Can You Deliver and then John Bushs vocals I was hooked. Good band that just didn't catch a break.
Man f**k you !! Armored Saint is metal!! They're not a waste . they were just not given the opportunity to become big. Unlike your poison ; bon jovi; winger crap! Shut your piehole.
Armored saint? Where have I been? John bush has the metal voice that cannot compare. The music and composition being a guitarist for 30 plus years? Awesome.
The most rock & metal stations on Pandora Radio!

joeeagle - saw the same tour, ride the lightning. Have to say your f**kin wrong - metallica went off. Cliff Burtons bass solo had people ripping the f**kin chairs out of the big apple in el paso. Not saying armored saint didn't play their a** off, but metallica left no doubt who was the opening act and who was the headliner.
joeeagle13
Saw them blow metallica of stage on the "ride the lighting/mar c h of the saint" tour about '85... rainbow musuc hall. Still amazed how things turned out. At least the saints never sold outicca. Lars.

The first time i heard them i was hooked.certa i n bands the way the songs are written around guitars maiden saxon priest ect.they are underated for sure but live there dangerous.
alexmonico

kidd21129

Armored saint. Why didn't these guys hit? O yeah. Crap like narvana and pearl clam.... no one ever said Americans know what is best for them.... the st knew. So did all the real headbangers back in the day. Wippersnappe r s , u missed one of the true greats.. enjoy your Kurt Kobane remix and your Courtney love movie. Ewwww.
joeeagle13
These guys completely laid waste to a place called "rainbow music hall" in Denver 85... in doing so they completely upstaged a little band known a metallica and left everyone wondering why bush and the boys didn't headline. Metallica could hardly stand. Drunk UN professional . . . metallica. Shocker.
John Bush is one of the most underrated metal singers ever.
Got to see them before Pritchard passed. The Hell on Wheels tour in '86, Helloween, Armored Saint, and Grim Reaper...Awe s o m e concert.
Despite what the bio says, sounds like glam to me.
@jordan.will 2 3 2 You missed that concert because of a high-school graduation ceremony. I'd say f**k the ceremony; I can always get my degree outside of the ceremony, I've got metal to attend to.
I missed possibly the best Metal show of all time because it was the same night as my highschool grad ceremony..Ar m o r e d Saint/Wasp/M e t a l l i c a at First Ave in Minneapolis. . p l a c e stood 1500 people I bummed but listened to March of the Saint hella Lot back in the day.

Like how the dude under me says Bush is s**t. That's why Metallica was gonna hire him on as their lead singer. Bush is a badass singer. All I've got to say.
What a waste of recording time, tape, and my time this band is. Too bad Anthrax picked up Bush, he fits right in with this garbage. And how is this Metal? Overkill, Slayer, Exodus, they are Metal. Atleast Iron Maiden and Judas Priest have talent, armored saint just gave me a headache. Glad I never bought any albums from the bargin bin.
La Raza (2010) is very professional l y packaged (cd sleeve and cd book). The band is amazing once again and the sound engineering is top notch for the guitar talent and writing that comes with it.

Check it out!
These guys are great, John Bush is one of the best metal voices ever

Armored Saint is incredible. They may be THE most underaprecci a t e d band ever. Yeah, Anvil got the short end of the stick for sure, but at least they were recognized for their first two albums. Symbol of Salvation is, to me, one of the best ever metal records top-to-botto m , and the rest of their catalogue is awesome and generally rewarding, and not very repetative. They rule \m/

I remembered when they first appeared on Enigma Records. When that label first came around, it was awesome for exposing bands like this.
Definitely one of the most underrated metal bands.
This band kicks a** i bin with them from day one
Wish I had heard these guys "back in the day." This a true metal.
patman0322
Yeah, how come I don't remember these guys? This is good stuff.
vastly underappreci a t e d
Such an underrated band.
seen at perkens palace back n the day and still kickin c ya
Saw these guys on tour wit quiet riot and whitesnake Armored Saint was by far the best band on stage that night. I bought March of the Saint the next day

Great band, and one of the ones that got me into metal in the first place! \m/
Some of the best classic metal around.

My teacher is David's Brother! =D
Armored Saint is the most underappreci a t e d metal bands of all time. Metal does not get better than this.
Dropping Like Flies! >_<\m/ That song is a damn eargasm...

I saw Saint this past summer with Bush back in the lead on vocals, & they kicked a**! With the resurgeance of 80's bands out there (& some dont sound so great) I'd trade looks for sound anyday

barccua is apunk who is scarred to admit he's reaaly in love with nkotb , who the hell are they anyway'maybe they hang out on his block
I have no idea what Barccua is smoking, but no one in this band had
anything to do with NEW KIDS on the block.
First of all John Bush would have kicked all of those NKOTB a** anyway.
Armored Saint, classic metal band. Should get more credit than they do.
james159
I remember these guys, didn't they form New kids on the block or somthing?
epic band. It's a shame that their name doesn't even get radio mention here in NY. Would love to see them live if they still tour (the remaining members, anyways)
Great band. Great music, great album covers.
