Ari Hest became interested in music while still a teenager growing up in the Bronx. Though he'd taken piano lessons as a child, he taught himself how to play the guitar, mostly by listening to records from his parents' collection (Paul Simon) and alternative radio (Pearl Jam, Dave Matthews). While studying at NYU, Hest hit the East Coast college circuit, performing a mix of covers and his own material. The exposure built him a respectable regional following, which he nurtured with self-released albums in 2001 and 2002 (Coming Home and Story After Story, respectively). Hest signed with Columbia Records in 2003 and issued Someone to Tell a year later. Created with producer David Rolfe, the album was a mix of new and re-recorded material and fit comfortably into the well-appointed adult alternative territory of artists like Josh Kelley and John Mayer. The Green Room Sessions, an EP (on which Hest played all the instruments) recorded and mixed on the popular free program GarageBand, came out in 2006, and was followed the following year by another full-length Columbia release, The Break-In. In 2008 he began recording and releasing a new track on his own subscription service every Monday for an entire year. Fans voted on their favorites, resulting in the release of 2009's appropriately titled Twelve Mondays. Sunset Over Hope Street, his first album for Downtown Records' Mercer Street imprint, was released in 2011. ~ Johnny Loftus, Rovi
I have been following Ari's career for a while now and have seen him live a number of times. He is an intelligent songwriter. His arrangements are precise and tasteful. He is an excellent guitarist and even plays piano on stage. His vocal range is massive. He sounds just as good live as he does recorded - no affectations needed. AND, he is a genuinely a nice guy! So, who says you can't have it all!! He does!
His voice reminds me of Adam Duritz a little. I really like this guy!

What a treat, Ari was the opening act for Indy's Acoustic Cafe. Ari and percussionist Doug were amazing. I can't stop listening to his rich velvet voice!!

I saw him for the first time last week in San Diego, and his voice is freaking awesome... I am definitely a fan now. I also agree with jani bear. He DOES tell a story, and it's one you don't want to miss world!!
I saw Ari last weekend in Ashland, OR. He and his fellow musicians knocked our socks off. What a top-notch performer. Very talented. He tells a story, and he tells it well.
Ari Hest is phenominal. I saw him in Jacksonville , FL about 5 years ago before he was so recognized. He is an extremely tallented songwriter. To the guy who said that he isn't taking in any risks, listen to "consistency " . That and many more of his songs are way more than "pretty simple". They are in fact very advanced. And yea he probably was the guy in 213 getting more puss than you.

Bird never flies is a beautiful song. I love his voice.
i know this is shallow, but this guy doesn't LOOK the part of a songwriter. can't put my finger on it. not only that, pretty simple and formulaic music, not taking any risks. looks like the guy in room 213 in your dorm that tried to be all sensitive and get girls by taking out his acoustic guitar unprovoked.
