The Appleseed Cast

Lawrence, KS-based emo quartet Appleseed Cast were originally comprised of singer/guitarist Christopher Crisci, guitarist Aaron Pillar, bassist Jason Wickersheim, and drummer Louie Ruiz. Signing to Deep Elm, the group made its debut on the 1998 label sampler Records for the Working Class, releasing the full-length The End of the Ring Wars later that same year. In 1999 Appleseed Cast (now with new drummer Josh Baruth) released a new single, "Skatter Ik Ignito," as well as a split EP with labelmates Planes Mistaken for Stars and Race Car Riot; Mare Vitalis followed in early 2000, heavily showcasing Baruth's complicated beats and the band's overall dense, atmospheric sound. Despite the hints of a new direction, the album couldn't have prepared fans for the two Low Level Owl albums released in 2001. Complex, delicate, and highly experimental, these two records took a cue from Radiohead's Kid A and sent the band careening into space rock and electronica with only traces of emo poking through. The records weren't nearly as commercially accepted, but their overall bravery showed that the band was prepared to make stylistic leaps.

The next year, Lost Songs brought four unreleased tracks from 1999 and five new songs together onto one album. Overdubbing new elements over the older songs, Appleseed Cast blended the tense emo of their early work and the broad experimentation of their new material. The band returned in 2003 with Two Conversations (Tiger Style), which continued to explore atmospheric texture in the framework of traditional rock & roll. An extensive tour followed the LP's release. The band next went on a brief hiatus following Tiger Style's demise, but soon returned with renewed energy and a new label. Peregrine appeared in March 2006 on Militia Group before hitting the road with dates on both coasts. By this time, the band consisted of founding members Crisci and Pillar, along with bassist Marcus Young and drummer Nathan Richardson (ex-the Casket Lottery). Sagamartha arrived in 2009, and was followed up by some lineup changes as John Momberg joined the band while Young, who wanted to focus on school, left the band and was replaced by Nate Whitman. Later that year, the band signed on with Graveface Records, and in 2011 released their first recordings for the label, the EP Middle States. Yet more line up changes would ensue before the band released their next album, with Taylor Holenbeck coming on as guitarist and Nathan Wilder taking over on drums. With this lineup the group returned with sixth album Illumination Ritual in spring of 2013. ~ Jason Ankeny & Bradley Torreano, Rovi

Scary kid album cover..song was OK at first BUT then I saw how they f¥©k with stephensgary it made it better ...not that I want stephensgary f¥©ked with but the thought that someone familiar with it took it very seriously made it immediately better half way through and I could hear some passion that at first wasnt landing HELPFUL comment stephensgary even if odd to me HEY just to me GOD bless you brother
I hate the way these guys f**k with my emotions!
i listened to it HUNDREDS OF times that is.
Listened to Mare Vitalis on a two week epic road trip... Michigan's Upper Peninsula. I cant describe how it fit in with the fall colour, the desolate landscape... and how every word applied to my life... especially secret and posiedon... a most intense and spiritual experience. the perfect soundtrack. gives me chills to think about it.
Saw them in Cleveland and they were unbelievable . I remember one of the guys had to go to the men's room in the middle of the set and the rest of the guys went into this ridiculous jam session until he came back. They are really chill guys to talk to; very humble. I don't think they realize how good they really are...
It's not emo per se it's just that it's all played in minor key and has a thought provoking, emotional feel to it. It's something that legitimately emotional people would listen to, not the posers you see all over the place...very different worlds.
Know what you mean. Loved Radiohead and Jimmy Eat World for years before I found out they were considered emo. Love these guys too.
Why are these guys emo? What makes emo emo? I don't understand.. .
Just a small note: The current drummer is John Momberg, joined during the recording of Sagarmatha. I saw these guys on the release tour of the album in Pomona and hung out with the guys as they loaded up their van, talking drums with John, and they are some of the most chill guys I've ever had the chance to hang out with. If you have the chance to see them play or to meet them, do it. They're always happy to talk to fans and hang out if time permits as well as put on a stellar performance.
sunsband.com / d o w n l o a d . You'll see 'em with these dudes in Chicago. Also, check out the side project from some of the Appleseed guys, Old Cains. It r u l e s .

@lyndseyhear t i s b e e p i n
they are playing low level owl 1 & 2 in their entirety in norman on february 24th. i can't wait.
Same here (sox too). For me, Peregrine is the best album I've ever heard. I haven't come across anything that I can listen to more without tiring even a little. I would be OK if this was the only music I was ever able to listen to.
i like them... a lot.
Who is this band and where has it been all of my life?!
I love this band! I saw them in Febraury for the first time. They're live shows are incredible. You don't want to miss them. And their new album Sagarmatha is amazing. It's chill but rocks at the same time. It has more of an airy feel to it with the instrumental tracks. It's ephereal.
((i see them this saturday AND sunday...wit h An Horse...))
I have got to go see these guys live. I kicked myself in the a** for missing them last time they passed through town.
One of the best live bands I have ever seen. They have changed quite a bit since then (2000, maybe) but I still like this sound.
Great band. Saw them at the High Dive in Denver...AMA Z I N G ! ! They have an awesome new disk out called Sagarmatha. It is instrumental heavy so if you are looking for something with more vocals Two Conversation s is a great disk.

Also check out Anesthesia. Relatively unknown band post-rock instrumental stuff….EXCEL L E N T !
Amazingly good stuff.

I will guess that the name refers to casting seeds to the earth in anticipation of growth, and wanderlust ala Johnny Appleseed. Or it could have a theatrical connotation (cast). Or not.

Excellent band, though. Two Conversation s is one of my faves of the past few years.

If you actually like appleseed, i highly suggest low level owl 1 and 2.....

like them, and the name isn't stupid... its unique.

Maybe they're underrated band because they have a stupid name. I bet it's some reference to the Anime movies.
Probably the most under-rated band. Basically, I love this band.
I'm lucky to live in Overland Park, KS! I love seeing this band!
