Animal Collective

Animal Collective were formed in Baltimore County, Maryland, by longtime friends and musical collaborators Avey Tare (David Portner), Panda Bear (Noah Lennox), Deakin (Josh Dibb), and Geologist (Brian Weitz). With a penchant for genre-hopping and studio experimentation, the group began drawing comparisons to everyone from the Residents and the Flaming Lips to the Incredible String Band and the Holy Modal Rounders. Solo and side projects proved to be a continual occupation for most of the group's members, particularly Panda Bear (Young Prayer, Person Pitch) and Avey Tare (Pullhair Rubeye), but Animal Collective proved to be the most successful of all the musicians' ventures.

The Collective released their debut album, Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished (originally titled Avey Tare and Panda Bear) in 2000 on the band's own Animal imprint. It was the first in a pair of captivating releases; the other was 2001's Danse Manatee (originally titled Avey Tare, Panda Bear and Geologist), which explored the fringes and intersecting boundaries of freak folk, noise rock, ambient drone, and twisting, melodic psychedelia. The live album Hollinndagain, which documented the band's debut tour alongside Black Dice, arrived in 2002, followed by 2003's Campfire Songs and Here Comes the Indian, the first albums to commit to the name Animal Collective and the first to feature all four members. The latter record was released on the group's newly minted Paw Tracks label.

As the Collective's popularity grew, so did their reach, resulting in a distribution deal with English independent label Fat Cat, which issued their first two albums as a package deal and paved the way for subsequent releases. The band returned in May 2004 with the triumphant Sung Tongs, a mysterious, fragilely melodic album that garnered positive press both at home and overseas, resulting in a series of successful international tours. The Prospect Hummer EP, which featured a collaboration with underground British folk legend Vashti Bunyan, arrived in early 2005, followed by the commercially and critically acclaimed full-length Feels later in the year. The band released the People EP in 2006, followed by the much heralded full-length Strawberry Jam in 2007, the band's first for Domino Records.

Merriweather Post Pavilion, the group's eighth and most accessible record to date, was released in 2009. It cracked the Top 20 in America and peaked at number 26 in the U.K., making Animal Collective the toast of the international blogosphere while also establishing their strength as a commercial force. Touring kept them busy for much of the year, but they did find some time to return to the studio and finish a short EP, Fall Be Kind, which appeared in November. In 2010 the group expanded its experimental sound into the visual realm with ODDSAC, a "visual album" that featured new material as the psychedelic soundtrack to a film starring the members of Animal Collective and directed by Danny Perez. Their next proper full-length, Centipede Hz, followed in 2012 along with an EP of remixes from the album entitled Monkey Been to Burntown in 2013. ~ James Christopher Monger, Rovi

Can't wait to see them at Treasure Island!
Hi, /mu/.
@directusher you listened to a great band called animal collective.
Ummm what did I listen ?
The first one I bought was Here Comes The Indian from a Swedish guy. I couldn't understand what he was saying but I already was aware of A.C. so I bought it. Now I have all of their albums. They have rarely performed live because I guess the magic usually happens for them in the studio. I haven't been able to get anyone else I know into them like I am. I like to infect people into fandom.

The “about Animal Collective" is actually a bio of “Vashti Bunyan". Uh…
@shadow: HAHA! Good call. Even though, imo, literally NONE of those groups are anything remotely close to Animal Collective in any way. But i dont know if I could name any better matches
I love how the similar artists to Animal Collective are Grizzly Bear, Dr Dog, Fleet Foxes, and Caribou. A collective of animals.
amen for good music
It's funny cuz in the short bio you see under the song is right, but when you expand it to the full bio it switches to Bunyan. Also funny bc they did an EP with her

Haha! For a quick sec, I said, WHAT?! Animal Collective has been around since the 70's!? Glitch in the music genome.
Wrong bio, yo.
These guys remind me of Painted Palms!
Wrong Bio. Btw the Boston show was sick aside from the tundra that was going on outside. They closed with the craziest version of Purple Bottle! What a treat! Also heard What Would I Want? Sky
six more days until GREATNESS! AND they're playing Bonnaroo this year!
Just got tix for the AnCo/Dan Deacon show in Boston!! It will definitely be worth the 7hr trek from the Philly area.
I honestly have no way to put into words what Animal Collective's music does to me. They are magical and weird and disturbed and just flat out breath-takin g . They got me addicted to music. I saw them live for the first time in September in Oakland and they are such incredible people. I fell in love with Noah the first time I laid eyes on him. My favortie four guys on the planet right here.

Love this band.
I really do not know what to say about this song.
Saw them live in Dallas. It was one of the best concerts I've been to in a while.
None of the new ish came on my station yet... Good thing i own it! N wtf is UP with these vanishing COMMENTS?!!!
Panda Bear that is all.
The Philly show was AMAZING! The stage setup was soo hypnotizing! Super hard to explain you just had to see it. And it was basically the same set as last time, the only diff is now the songs i heard last time were familiar bc they were released on Centipede. They also played Peacebone, Cobwebs, Lion in a Coma, Brother Sport, n Honeycomb!
I want to be double penetrated by Avey and Panda Bear
I'm so ready to get mind-banged by animal collective tonight in Philly!!
I'm glad they didn't stick to the immediacy of MPP for everything they've put out since (in typical fashion, they're constantly moving). Cant wait till October third!
Nice to have Centipede up! Now we just gotta get the ODDSAC audio up. That has some really awesome songs on it like Screens, Tantrum Barb, and What Happened
best band out there. innovative sound, creative, just awesome fun music. I love how even though every album has a different feel, they are all awesome in their own way
if you dont know spirits, get tha @#$% outta here !
just so out the a** original and so incredibly talented and skillful
My absolute fave band of all time. They are the only band I know of where I love every song they have. Geniuses they are, crazy original. They are the soundtrack to my life :3
unreal
I have never been disappointed by Animal Collective!! ! I have Merriweather Post Pavillion on vinyl and want to get Centipede Hz when it comes out.
Oh yeah!... AND got tickets for their show at the Mann in Philly in October
Preordered the new LP! Sept 3rd cannot come soon enough!
What happened to their info?!
I hear they're back in the studio!!!! Can't come soon enough!
I forgot how addictive Feels is as an album. It's really right up there with Strawberry Jam
i can't put into words how much i love this band. MPP changed my life. simple as that.
everything else i found by them made me adore and respect them more, but it all started with the most mainstream album.
plus, Noah Lennox is in this band, and thats more than enough reason right there to fall in love.
