Amorphis

Lead guitarist Esa Holopainen and drummer Jan Rechberger formed the band Amorphis in Finland in 1990. To complete their lineup they recruited vocalist/guitarist Tomi Koivusaari and bassist Olli-Pekka Laine. They released a demo in 1991 called Disment of Soul. The demo was so successful in getting attention for the group that they had acquired a record deal and released an EP the same year. They next released their first full-length album, The Karelian Isthmus, in 1992. The following year, their early demo recording session was released as Privilege of Evil. 1994 saw the group sending out their next CD, Tales from the Thousand Lakes. In 1994, Kim Rantala joined the band on keyboards, being integrated as a member of a band rather than the side musician he was replacing. An EP entitled Black Winter Day was released the next year. Their next album was Elegy. This disc showcased a new six-member lineup, completed by Pasi Koskinen as their second vocalist. The lineup at this point also included new drummer Pekka Kasari. In 1997 they released My Kantele. In 1998, Rantala left the group, being replaced by Santeri Kallio. The group released Tuonela with that lineup in 1999. The following year, Niclas Etelävuori replaced Laine on bass. In 2001 the band went in a more experimental direction, including saxophones and a greater focus on keyboards for Am Universum. Jan Rechberger rejoined the band in 2003 just in time to record Amorphis' sixth studio album, Far from the Sun. Koskinen left the band in 2004 to focus on his family and was replaced by Tomi Joutsen. For their next project, Amorphis began work on a series of concept albums based on the famous Finnish epic poem The Kalevala, releasing Eclipse in 2006, Silent Waters in 2007, and Skyforger in 2009. In 2010 the band decided to revisit some of its older work, recording new arrangements of earlier material for Magic & Mayhem: Tales from the Early Years. ~ Gary Hill, Rovi

I greatly prefer newer, more prog influenced Amorphis.
MooMoo007™ isn't there a fire that you could be dying in somewhere?
My sun is simalar to roads u ntravled by Linkin Park.
This guy sounds like The Claw from Inspector Gadget. FAIL!
The most rock and metal stations on Pandora Radio!
Tales from the Thousand Lakes!!!!!!! !
Never heard of this band but I'm liking it... Funny, my classical guitar is named Tomi and my electric is Olli, spelled the same as the men in the bio. Spooky.
Tales from the Thousand Lakes is awesome....s o is Elegy
Only heard 'Born From Fire' I expect that the rest is just as good.
nice
Hm. I've heard two songs now (both off Eclipse), and I really wish they would stop the growling. The music is great, but I much (MUCH) prefer actual singing, a la Kamelot, SA or recent Therion. I'll keep listening though.
Fat chance they would ever travel to Alaska...I'm just holding out hope that they are ever again going to tour the mainland GOD Europe is freaking spoiled with all the bands that tour so regularly over there...not to mention all the big festivals...
Personally I lost interest in them after Tuonela. Went a little too Prog for me, but hey, whatever. Karelian Isthmus is a classic of epic, melodic death, and Tales From the Thousand Lakes is every bit as trippy as any Pink Floyd effort without losing a single milligram of heaviness. As a metalhead who enjoyed smoking weed, this was a favorite band for obvious reasons!
is the lead guitarist Esa Holopainen any relation to Nightwish's Tuomas Holopainen? because if so, that would be bad-@ss.
wish they would come to Alaska, these guys kick serious a**!!!!!
The best band that I know that my friends don't. Best of all their sounds run a huge gammut over the years. New disc Skyforger highly recommended and Tales' is a no-brainer.
THIS BAND IS AWESOME LIVE. HOPE THEY COME BACK TO THE STATES SOON, BEEN LISTENING TO THEM SINCE 1993. THEY GET BETTER WITH EACH RELEASE!
Why hasn't pandora put Skyforger on here yet?
Hmmm, had heard of this band. Not quite the symphonic metal sound I had in mind. They're still awesome, though!~
I agree that comparing these guys to Opeth is not fair. These guys did it 1st. If you don't belive, check out Tuonela (still one of the most unique albums I've ever heard). Zeppelin/Flo y d , plus Goth, Plus Death all topped with Cherries.
Hello, some Talk Form The THousand Lakes please
Love them. Very, very, very underrated. They deserve much more attention I feel. While some of their stuff I feel can be frankly, quite bad many other songs make up for it. Good band! I like.
They don't sound like Opeth, tho they share some musical similarities (harsh sounds mixed with soft). I am very impressed with what I hear however. I'm in agreement with armusik. It isn't fair to compare the two.
Loved this band since the beginning. Huge leaps each of the first three albums and Elegy was huge when I was just finishing up college. Luckily I got to sit in on an interview with Tomi in 1995 via the phone. Cool band and incredible writing. They got a little more predictable over the years but when Elegy came out they were light years ahead of the death metal scene. Opeth is awesome and far more advanced musically but these guys did it earlier and just plain different.

OOh- they may not sound like Opeth (who can?)- but they still sound good-
jennlinx
They DO NOT sound like Opeth and the orignal song is much better than this
Wow, they sound like Opeth. And that's a compliment.
huge band one of my favorite just bad publicity in us
in europe they are big
Wow it is a shame that they are not poplar in the United States. They deserve it in my book to and I think that to other people they would like/love their music. Quite melodic but powerful and heavy, the music melds perfectly with the vocals. They are a perfect example of the unfound talent in Finland and Scandinavia in general.Even if they have been around for a while they deserve a large US tour.
Amorphis is a whole genre unto themselves. I don't see any other band playing the music they do. Nothing overly complicated. It's the heartwrenchi n g melodies in each song that is so beautiful. Someone called them a death metal band in them comments here. No way. Melodic metal maybe but not death or doom or any such label they usually get tagged with.
This really shows me how people are! THANK YOU!!!!!!!! GREED!!!!!!! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
I think this is one of the BEST songs you guys ever wrote! I play it everyday in my truck when I go anywhere! THE WAY!!!!!!!
obelisk74
Seeing their show soon, I cant wait, one of my favorite bands!
neomiaheber
I agree with David, it is a shame that Amorphis, is not that big over here on the states, I remember going trough different stores in order to find their records,
Scandinavian metal, those people over there really crank it, so many great bands. And hardly any of them reach the masses in the USA, Americans like wuss rock and hip slop and cRAP. That's g-damm shame

is the guitarist related to the guitarist (?) from nightwish, tuomas holopainen, or is it just a coincidence?
amorphis is an amazing band. this music has pulled me out of despair and away from suicide. i know that there is a god because of amorphis. i hope people all over the world listen and like. i will buy every album they ever release.gods p e e d my brothers and sisters.
Another awesome Finnish band.
Second favorite melodic death metal only to Opeth.
