Before she was the lead singer, pianist, lyricist, and composer for the "Brechtian punk cabaret" duo the Dresden Dolls, Amanda Palmer was a Wesleyan University graduate who had been involved in theater for a number of years. After college, she founded the Shadowbox Collective, a group that performed plays as well as street theater. (Palmer herself was a busker who performed as a living statue.) In 2000 she met drummer Brian Viglione; though Palmer could not read music, she formed the Dresden Dolls a year later and became the main musical force behind the group. She also continued to explore other creative avenues, and in 2006 released The Dresden Dolls Companion, a book that featured original art, a history of the band and its first album, and a partial autobiography by Palmer. At the end of that year, the Dresden Dolls performed the Palmer-penned musical The Onion Cellar with the American Repertory Theatre. In 2008 she released the solo album Who Killed Amanda Palmer, which featured Ben Folds as both a producer and a performer. After paying tribute to Radiohead on the 2010 EP Amanda Palmer Performs the Popular Hits of Radiohead on Her Magical Ukulele, in early 2011 Palmer released Amanda Palmer Goes Down Under, an album filled with references to Australia and New Zealand and written while on tour there. 2012 saw Palmer working towards the release of Theater Is Evil, her first studio album since breaking ties with major labels following Who Killed Amanda Palmer. The album, which featured collaborations with a group of musicians dubbed The Grand Theft Orchestra, was funded by fans through a campaign on the pledge-based fundraising site Kickstarter. The project's original goal of $100,000 was exceeded tenfold, with over a million dollars in pledges being collected. ~ Katherine Fulton, Rovi
ampersand and astronaut are definitely her best- so is runs in the family. oh my god she has an amazing voice- different than most in a way that is just flat-out beautiful.
My husband played me Sing on our first date. We have seen her in one form or another 4 times. I can listen to her again and again. My favorite musician by miles.
She is my favorite female singer. Her voice is beautiful and she is an excellent piano player, she is my hero and inspiration for learning it.

Darkness and humor, intelligent while whimsical, often simple yet demonstrating great finess. A perfomance artist and provacatuer, groundreaking in her use of social media. Beyond all of which, a brilliant musician with hooks for days, a rare shameless soul and an Artist in the real sense of the word. LOVE AFP!
The more I listen, the more I love her! The lyrics to Ampersand are nothing short of brilliant. They feel like poetry. She may not desire to live her life to one side of an ampersand, but will see her live at An Evening with Amanda Palmer & Neil Gaiman in Seattle. :) I can't wait! :D
Why this artist bio claims she can't read music is beyond me... I'm pretty sure she took piano lessons as a kid--thus learning at least the BASICS behind reading music.
AFP is absolutely amazing and a creative genius. We saw her in Asheville, NC, and the show was incredible. You must go see her live...she even met with the fans afterward to autograph and chitchat! You go AFP!
Amanda, I know I'm merely fifteen years old, and in all your music you say you're happily single, I've honestly fallen irrationally and completely in love with you. I just wish I liked girls.

Amanda Palmer is an amazing artist. Look up her version of Fake Plastic Trees. It's her and a ukulele. IT may be a little out of tune but ti will send hills up your spine. Super intense!
my 2 favorite albums are "Yes, Virginia" and "WKAP"! ran down to Philly from NY to see her, absolutely amazing, cant wait til June 8-12 when shes in NYC!!!
I *love* Runs in The Family... and everything the Dresden Dolls did is pure gold. If you like the backing instruments on WKAP then check out Zoe Keating-- she's the magnificent cello in the background, and she has a great solo career.
AMANDA F**KING PALMER! :D She is the bomb. Seriously. My favorite song of hers would have to be runs in the family~ Or Organist rapes Page Turner is you count the songs she wrote while with Brian. xD
And a personal plea to her fans when explaining about her record label and how she is trying to get dropped so she can do with her music what she wishes, to pick up their phones and join the mailing list via text so everyone is aware of what is happening with The Dresden Dolls and her solo albums, plays, books, all forms of communications in fact. The songs were brilliantly performed despite her having been sick. What a wonderful night! Amanda... rawk on baby!
Amanda was brilliant and beautiful last night at the Santa Fe Brewing Company in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Saw the posting online for the show yesterday, bought tickets online and drove on down to see her perform. She came out through the side, playing her ukulele and surprising most people by walking right through the audience and up to the stage. Very intimate setting. An "Ask Amanda" segway where the audience was given a chance to ask her any question they wished..................
