The daughter of jazz chanteuse Ann Marie Schofield and the late jazz pianist Walter Davis, Jr., Alana Davis made her own stand as a singer and songwriter. Born and raised in New York's Greenwich Village, Davis learned to play the guitar as a youngster. Music remained an avocation, however, until her late-teens. Although she began writing songs at the age of eighteen, Davis didn't turn to music as a career until briefly attending Mohawk Valley Community College in Utica, New York. Leaving school to devote her full attention to music, Davis recorded a demo tapes of her original tunes. Signed by Elektra, she released her first single, a remake of Ani DiFranco's "32 Flavors", and it reached the top forty of Billboard's "Hot 100" in early 1998. The single's success also led to an invitation to participate in the Lilith Fair. But Davis and Elektra disagreed about the direction of her career. While the label hoped for a straightforward R&B sound, Davis was more interested in fusing her rich mix of influences. Her 2001 sophomore effort Fortune Cookies was powerful, original, and unique; it also went un-promoted, and drove a wedge between she and the label. Striking out on her own, Davis formed Tigress Records imprint to release her third album, 2005's critically-acclaimed Surrender Dorothy. ~ Craig Harris, Rovi
Alana Davis is a testament to what the mainstream music industry is about--the same old B.S. She was almost uncategorizable, so they shelved her best work, Fortune Cookies. Thank goodness some of us discovered her before that happened. I too wish she'd come back!
Pandora is great for hearing artists I would not normally hear on the stupid radio. Heard Alana Davis and I loved her music! If you get a chance check out her music.
Your music brings me back to my passion. Back in 1995 I had a hand building class at a Jr. College and wow...It was the best release of tension ever I made some of my best works of art to your melodies. My parents even tho I love them so, told me that they were done paying for Arts & Crafts. I soon after lost myself for a bit,I soon found me again threw your sweet sounds and my self that constantly reminded me of what I may have lost. Thank You, Alana Davis for your AMAZING push to realize!

she's beautiful and her music has been so overlooked! I love that she refuses to cast herself into one genre.
Heard her song "Crazy" off the "Blame It on Me" album while having dinner at a restaurant that had it on Muzak. Even over all the noise and chatter, I was completely blown away!! There are hardly any ORIGINAL artists like Ms. Davis. Her music is completely it's own entity. I really do hope she considers recording a new album. I'm tired of all this cookie cutter, American Idol pop bulls@!t!! We need more REAL artists with REAL talent!! I'm hooked on her music cuz I feel it!
