After Forever

Originating in Holland, After Forever represent a distinctly new-millennium breed of heavy metal band -- one rooted in familiar styles such as doom, Gothic and power metal, but utilizing the seemingly contradictory element of a sweet, female voice to offset the music's reigning aggression. In their case, this vocalist is operatically trained soprano Floor Jansen, whose contributions bring bands like the Gathering, Tristania, and Nightwish to mind. Alongside guitarists Sander Gommans and Mark Jansen, bassist Luuk van Gerven, keyboardist Jack Driessen, and drummer Joep Beckers, she helped transform mid-'90s metal band Apocalyps into After Forever while most members were still in their teens. Signing with Transmission Records, the band issued their debut album, Prison of Desire to great acclaim in the year 2000, then quickly followed it with 2001's more refined Decipher (featuring new keyboard player Lando van Gils, and drummer Andre Borgman). With their profile now rising fast (at least domestically), two singles, "Emphasis" and "Monolith of Doubt," were extracted from the latter album to title E.P. releases, and Floor also found time to lend her talents to space-metal composer Arjen Anthony Lucassen's vaunted Star One project. 2003 saw the release of an EP/DVD named Exordium & Insights, and after replacing original guitarist Mark Jansen with Bas Maas, After Forever released their third full-length album in 2004's Invisible Circles. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia, Rovi

Floor jensen isnt she
great combo of beauty and the beast feel for vocals
shes the lead singer in nightwish, which is good
they need more of this on ITunes! geez they only have after forever, their last album they disbanded O_O :/ i love leaden legacy
Leaden Legacy is a great song...I'm surprised a little, I don't know itfthe rest is as good I'm am interested in them now, anyone know anything ? If she doesn't make it into Nightwish Toumas is a fool !!!
I realize that some people consider the growls to be an essential part of the genre, but to me it's like putting mustard on a chocolate cake. In other words, it ruins an otherwise great song.
Floor Jansen is...okay.
I have a channel that has 3 or 4 of the listed similar artists and the other listed similar artist is always played on said channel, yet for some reason it took forever to hear one of their songs ... Oh we'll.

Floor as vocalist on the current Nightwish tour is hair raising. See You Tube videos.

After Forever was a great band. If you want more of this kind of stuff, check out Epica.

grokking2000
They did break up. Floor just released an album with a new band called Revamp.
GOOD STUFF, BUT EPICA IS MUCH BETTER.
Yeah, they are a great band. Too bad they broke up(according to Wikipedia,an y w a y ) .
Floor Jansen has an amazing voice!
Floor rules my world.
@Forget My Silhouette: Epica was founded by the former lead guitarist in After Forever when he left this band, so it's the second one of your scenarios.

This band sounds a lot like Epica. Either that, or Epica sounds a lot like this band... ;)
I love how the lyrics to these songs have such a depth to them. Very thought-prov o k i n g .
I don't mind growling vocals in most of these bands, but it is a good break to hear Marco's voice in NW. I also like the male vocalist of VOA(since Castaway.)
Marco of NW really doesn't growl most of the time, I would consider his counterpoint to Tarja and now Anette more like the vocalists of power metal.
Love the female vocals accompanied by the deep growls. Creates a great contrast.
I didn't recognize Tony at first listen, either. Probably because he's singing deeper on that song than he does in Sonata. But he sounds awesome! He's also performed with NW on the 2001 live version of Beauty And The Beast, and did a small amount of background vocals on Over The Hills And Far Away.
Ah. Well they made the right call because Angels Fall First proved that Tuomas should never ever sing on their albums. Now I'm wondering how I didn't notice that Tony Kakko was singing on Astral Romance though...
Umm, guys. I really need to butt in here.

Sami has NEVER sang on any NW songs. He was only the bass player. If you're thinking of the deep vocals on Oceanborn, those were done by Tapio Wilska from Finntroll. And the vocals on AFF were by Tuomas. The other male vocals in various songs by them were either done by Tony Kakko (2001 Astral Romance remake) or Marco, after 2002.
Who was that singing on Angels Fall First, Tuomas? If so, he really really shouldn't do that, he found a way to be just slightly out of pitch for extended intervals, which is my kryptonite. The vocals on Oceanborn were fine though.
@Yoho: Yeh. You have to admit that Morten and Marco are pretty good, as growlers go. Also, for contrasting clean male vocals, Sami from NW is awesome. I should look him up on wiki to see what he's been up to.
All things being equal, the growling on After Forever's last album is probably the best of the lot that I've heard in the whole "Beauty and the Beast" sub-sub-genr e . If you're looking for good female-front e d symphonic metal without any growling/gru n t i n g , try Within Temptation, Lunatica, Amberian Dawn, Katra, Coronatus, Krypteria, or Unsun (and probably a few I'm forgetting).
@Jarratt: It's an approach that you'll see almost everywhere. It's supposed to be a contrast deal. Acutally, Morten Vreland, Marco Hietala, and Sami are pretty good. Not great but ok as contrasting male vocals.
Someone explain to me why these great female-led symphonic metal bands have to have Cookie Monster singing with them! I hate that style of "singing."
LOL. Nice one, 12nights.
*Walks in and looks around* Anybody here? No, I guess not. *Walks out*
sounds great to me! Floor needs some good guitars to back her up. AF's are too weak and "poppy" to me.
aye!
I am!!! All in favor, say aye!
Who's in favor of Floor picking up some death metal guitarists for her new ReVamp project?

With death metal riffage, the guitaring might actually be strong enough to stand up to her voice.
blasted Pandora! I have to go to Grooveshark to hear this band in order to hear a song! >:(

to add my few cents, I don't listen to them much anymore, but I give Lacuna Coil my thanks for them getting me into gothic metal. the music is monotonous at times and their albums rough listens depending on mood, but I still enjoy several songs.
That is indeed exciting news, I shall have to keep an eye out for that.
Exciting News: Floor Jansen will be recording again! The new band is called ReVamp and the first album is set for 2010!
I actually think LC is pretty good. Sure, they can be monotonous at times but they were one of the first bands in their genre.
Okay, I'll admit that Heaven's A Lie isn't as bad as most of their stuff. But besides that and Our Truth, I hate all their music.
I actually like some of Lacuna Coil's songs, but I will certainly not dispute that quite a lot of them are indeed very monotonous. They are by far the most 'hit and miss' of the many bands in this particular genre that I listen to.
fuzzywuggums :

The Edenbridge singer gets ninth place :)

On Christina... I hate Lacuna Coil. It's pretty simple. I think their music is boring, monotonous, and not creative at all. I have given them many tries, but still the only song I didn't DESPISE was Our Truth.
Hey 12nights I think your forgot Christine Scabbia :) and what about Sabine Edelsbacher from eden brdige :)
I just picked up the After Forever album and I have to say I am loving Floor Jansen's voice. Very cool.
