Acoustic Alchemy

During the late '80s and '90s, Nick Webb and Greg Carmichael produced a series of mellow albums classified as adult contemporary music, though the guitarists encompass the range of jazz and new age as well. Both grew up in England during the '60s listening to pop/rock, though Webb studied jazz guitar at Leeds College of Music while Carmichael focused on classical guitar at the London College of Music. Originally formed by Webb and Simon James, Acoustic Alchemy later became Webb and Carmichael; the duo initially worked for Virgin Airlines, providing in-flight music on trans-Atlantic trips. Signed to MCA in the mid-'80s, Acoustic Alchemy released its debut album, Red Dust & Spanish Lace, in 1987.

After two subsequent releases, the duo signed with GRP in 1990. Their second GRP album, Reference Point, was nominated for a Grammy Award. Positive Thinking followed in 1998 in the wake of Webb's February 6 cancer-related death; their jazz content was quite small, but Acoustic Alchemy's albums consistently charted number one on the adult contemporary charts. By 2000, Carmichael unveiled a revamped Acoustic Alchemy that included longtime sidemen like bassist Frank Felix, guitarists John Parsons and Miles Gilderdale, and keyboardist Terry Disley, as well as new members such as keyboardist Tony White. That year's The Beautiful Game was the new lineup's first release. AArt followed in 2001 and proved to be the group's biggest splash, landing them another Grammy nomination that year.

Empowered by that success, the band continued to tour and, when they had time, record. The resulting two albums, 2003's Radio Contact and 2005's American/English (still on Higher Octave), further solidified the new lineup and ushered in the release of the concert/documentary DVD Best Kept Secret in 2006. 2007 found Acoustic Alchemy collaborating with Higher Octave labelmates Down to the Bone for the album This Way. In 2011, Acoustic Alchemy marked the band's 30th anniversary with the release of the album Roseland. ~ John Bush, Rovi

I saw the old band play, but also was delighted to meet Greg and Nick (This was in the early days) and spend time with them on a couple of occasions. They were very pleasant company, as was their manager. (Can't remember the manager's name.)
Love the group and love to share the Music. While taking a train trip I got to swap cs's with a Russian Guitarist. He said he had not heard of the group before but was impressed by the tight precision of the Guitar Leads.

Glad to know that AA is still current, only CD I've had all these years was called Blue Chip, from the early 90s ... Hope to hear more. I'll hafta listen around some. /;^)
Just saw them last night in concert in Sellersville , PA. A great show! No flashy stage show, just the 5 band members and their instruments. They let their musical talents be the focus. I would see them again and again.

Can't say that I recall ever hearing AA before, but I like them. This tune from Radio Contact - very good. Won't be my last time listening.

Really enjoy listening to this group. I am a big fan!
I've been fortunate to be an AA fan from the beginning and have seen them in concert over 100 times. They continue to grow and shine, each release better than the previous. Their shows never get old. While we miss Nick, he would be proud that AA lives on.

Lucky, I always wanted to see them live, they are by far my favorite Acoustic guitar duo. I did get to see Eric Johnson last weekend in Fort Lauderdale, Great guitar player by any measure and even nicer guy!

I saw AA at Yoshi's in Oakland, last night, July3, 2012. Amazing group, great music..had always heard them but this is the first time I've seen them on stage. I would do it again
I saw AA in Boulder, CO in early 90's. I believe they had just released their Back on the Case CD. Does anyone know if Pandora carries any of their Back on the Case tracks ? Their music always brings a smile and sense of stability in an often chaotic day .....

Fantastic music, the Best of drew me in, now I am an addict. They broke my heart by taking their Florida touring dates out this year. Looks like a road trip for my wife and I in the future.

I've been listening and following AA for many years. As an acoustic guitarist, I find their music beautifully crafted with point-counte r p o i n t guitar play from at least two guitars. Live concerts are fantastic. One of my favorite groups.
hm, i think i really like this Acoustic Alchemy.

Wow! Diggin' the new album up on Pandora. Looks like it's time for my fifth show next season :)
Great guitar playin' ....and great music to listen to.Just another reason i listen to jazz!!!!
If the Angels play music they learn from this guys.
i love Acoustic Alchemy
Acoustic Alchemy, in my opinion, ushered in the current rash of acoustic guitarists like Andy Mckee, Don Ross, and it would be remiss to not mention Tommy Emmanuel.

Finally got to see them last night. Exceptional show. Total quality. No marketing and goofing off like so many of the younger musicians seem to do these days. Very personable, humorous and fabulous music. Only complaint - the show had to end.
If you like this band you oughta see them live - it just doesn't get any better. I'm blown away everytime I see them!

Can't find my Refernce Point CD. Wanted my 16yr old boy to hear again what we would rock to sleep to when he was an infant.

Their Album Positive Thinking will always have a special place in my life. My wife and I listened to it many times over as we traveled each weekend over several months to visit her mother as she left us. It was only after she was gone that I told her the album was written and recorded in a home studio in the U.K. as Nick Webb was dying.

I recommend any of their discs as I own most of them and they all contain gold. The earlier stuff with Nick and Greg has outstanding compositions with stee

I run four miles a day with my iPod blasting - I know most of their disks by where they are on the mile markers. Inspiring and motion filled music.
OMG... this music makes me wake up inside.
Doesn't get any better for an avid guitar man!

Acoustic Alchemy holds a special, resounding place in my life. If they are near the Boston area performiong live, I will be there. Been listening to them since the early 80's. Outstanding!
mking1960
I discovered Acoustic Alchemy in 1987 during a great change in my life. Their music continued to play in the background of my life, inspiring me. I work in television and had the great opportunity to work with them and they are the only artists I ever got to sign an autograph. I was saddened by the passing of Nick Webb. They were a class act and I love the flow their music. Nick lives on in every beautiful note.
random974
We had the pleasure of seeing Nick and Greg in concert several times. The most fun was the Catalina Island Jazz Trax festival. Fantastic!
